Students who are enrolled in the Master's in Holocaust and Genocide Studies Program can apply Certificate courses to their elective requirements for the Master's. Students who complete HGS-600 and 3 Certificate electives will receive the Certificate in addition to the MA degree.
Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Genocide Prevention, students will be able to:
- Engage in the applied practice of preventing genocide and related crimes through contributions to ongoing work with communities, NGOs, state, regional, and international organizations, and research;
- Apply a critical Genocide Studies and Prevention lens to existing knowledge, theory, and practice;
- Identify and critically analyze the processes, actors, and the regional and global dynamics that shape genocidal events and responses, past and present;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing strategies for preventing, intervening in, and responding to genocide and related crimes and develop measurable methods for the implementation and testing of new practices;
- Investigate the community-specific and culturally-specific nature and experience of genocide and related crimes, and embed local knowledge and community-driven approaches in prevention practice;
- Interrogate how genocide and identity-based violence dehumanize individuals and collectives and explore strategies that advance rehumanization and societal resilience.
