Individualized Major
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science -Interdisciplinary Programs
If your interests cross disciplinary boundaries and are not met by an existing major at Keene State College, take the lead in your education by creating your own major. An individualized major is a self-designed, interdisciplinary major that allows you to create a program of study to fit your own specific interests to meet your education goals. An individualized major is composed of an interdisciplinary program of studies, appropriately designed to:
- enhance the student's ability to integrate and synthesize content and/or methodology from two or more academic disciplines/areas, and
- satisfy an individual student's educational interests or career objectives.
The program must be identified by a unique title and a combination of courses that is distinctly different from existing undergraduate majors and program outcomes.
The minimum number of credits is 120 credits for a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, with a minimum of 40 Integrative Studies Program/general education credits and a minimum of 36 credits of major courses. Whereas major requirements are usually established by the academic discipline, the Individualized Major program of study is designed by the student in consultation with a faculty advisory committee comprised of two or more faculty members, subject to approval by the Associate Provost.
In the event students choose to complete the Individualized Major as a second major, a total of no more than 8 credits from the first major may be applied to the Individualized Major.
Processing the Individualized Major
- Advisory Committee. The student selects an Advisor of Record from the principal discipline and an additional faculty member from each secondary discipline represented in the individualized major. All committee members must be full-time faculty.
- A meeting of the committee and student is called to discuss the proposed major. With committee guidance, the student designs the program of studies.
- The Individualized Major documentation must be completed and signed by the student and cosigned by members of the Advisory Committee prior to final approval by the Associate Provost. The signed form, along with a completed copy of the Individualized Major Worksheet, must be dropped off at, or emailed to, the Office of the Provost for its final review.
- Once approved, copies of the proposal will be distributed to the student, each member of the advisory committee and the Registrar’s Office. The original will be retained in the Office of the Provost.
Completing and Modifying the Individualized Major
- The student is responsible for
- completing all Integrative Studies Program/general education requirements,
- progressing through the Individualized Major program as approved by the advisory committee and the Associate Provost, and
- enrolling in sufficient electives and upper-level courses to fulfill credit requirements for the degree.
- Changes to the Individualized Major program must be signed off on by the Advisory Committee members and approved by the Associate Provost. These amendments must be in writing utilizing the Individualized Major Program Revision form and accompanied by appropriate rationale.
